The first ‘Art Beyond the Divide’ was held at Seymour TAFE College in 2012 in response to outrage at the negative depiction of the town in an ABC documentary series 'Two on the Gret Divide'.
The idea of running an Art Show to dispel the image that had been conveyed by the ABC was to show that Seymour did have some cultural aspects, including a strong art community.
Art Beyond the Divide showed that the divisive comparison between the city and regional areas across the Great Divide conveyed by the TV show was a myth, and that we could put on an art show as good as any in the city.
A generous bequest made to the Society by Isobel Robinson was used to fund the major award. The first show was opened by local celebrity chef and artist, Peter Russell Clarke.
